Queering Salsa: Exploring Consent and Power through Dance
Exploring embodied consent and communication skills for intimate relationships through partnered movement. In this unique and interactive workshops, Tasha combines her passion for salsa dance with her work as an inclusive sexuality and relationships educator, balancing fun with deeper questions:
How might we move when not limited by social norms? How might we listen when we lead?
How can we develop agency whilst we follow?
How can we adapt to others whilst remaining authentic?
Beginner friendly and no partner or dance experience required. Participants will be guided through a series of movement exercises with themselves, partners and in groups, with reflective discussions and opportunities to share.
Feedback from participants
“The energy that you put into it made this so enjoyable and fun. Particularly fascinated by the concept of roles not being fixed to a specific gender and to have the possibility to explore and check in with our needs and feelings. You made also the learning of steps so approachable! I head how there was this common feeling of exploring things with a different perspective, which is exciting but also can feel quite scary, but the containers created for the workshop felt perfectly safe for this type of exploration!”
“The shift in energy was fucking epic. I am feeling emotional. It was very healing for me as it helped me overcome my internalised homophobia.”
“I liked the consent part. I really like the practices of self autonomy and power dynamics that were explored. Very clever concept and ideas!”
“Safe, welcoming and inclusive. As a dancer I loved switching up and blurring definitions of leader and follower.”
“Amazing opening experience that felt relaxing and with no pressure. Seeing people as people rather than the usual categories. Feeling that I could be myself without the social pressure. It was great to lead and be lead. Wanting to take this forward to friends and get into the environments to experience the culture and expression. Thank you for being an incredible facilitator and teacher”
““It really played around with gender norms and expectations and fucked with that on so many levels”
“Thank you for bringing this to life! I’ve always wanted to learn salsa but have felt challenged by this exact aspect. Thanks for working with boundaries and making a safe space :) now I feel really in my body with it and I know I could also teach the moves because you broke them down so well.”
“Excellent workshop. You got the balance right between teaching the steps and letting us focus on the lead/follower interaction. We were not too much in our head on steps!”
